William Sossai is a Brazilian cinematographer whose work moves fluidly between cinema and commercial filmmaking, always with a keen sensitivity to light, texture, and visual storytelling. Based in Lisbon, his approach blends technical precision with an intuitive artistic eye, creating images that balance poetic realism with cinematic expressiveness.
His journey began in documentary filmmaking, capturing stories across Africa, East Timor, Russia, and Israel. That experience shaped his visual and narrative sensibilities, eventually leading him to fiction. Among his recent work is “Podia Ter Esperado Por Agosto”, directed by César Mourão and selected for the Tribeca Festival 2024, reinforcing his distinctive visual signature in contemporary cinema.
In commercial cinematography, his work has contributed to projects that have gained international recognition, including a Gold Lion at the Cannes Lions Festival. His ability to shape light and composition allows his visual style to adapt across different formats and scales while always maintaining a strong sense of authenticity.
Beyond traditional film and advertising, there is a continuous pursuit of experimental techniques that expand the possibilities of visual language. Whether working with digital or analog formats, the exploration of texture, movement, and grain has become an essential part of his creative process. This dedication to cinematography as a form of expression has earned him multiple awards from the Portuguese Society of Cinematographers (AIP), including Best Cinematography in Video Art for the experimental film “The Black Cat”, which was also featured on Kodak’s official platforms.
Whether in a feature film, a commercial campaign, or an experimental project, every piece of work is driven by a desire to tell stories with depth and visual impact, using light and movement as essential narrative elements.
